Review 02.4 — Ryan & Mitty

Another toofer!

This week's $5 (and 25-cents) Tuesday Guys' Movie is "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit." It's a good 'un, Gang, a recasting of the late Tom Clancy's franchise. This one stars Chris Pine (the latest incarnation of Capt. James T. Kirk?) in a story about how Ryan joins the intelligence community.

I've never read Clancy's books, but I have seen all the movies based on them. A few reviews currently complain this latest flick isn't true to the Ryan storyline. Maybe not, but who cares? The movie, also featuring Kevin Costner and Kiera Knightley, is goo-OOD!

Moms, I don't remember any F-bombs (quite surprising nowadays) nor gore, so you can probably let Junior go to this one without feeling guilty. Oh, and Guys, this is a Guys' Movie you can take your better half to see, and not feel like a sissy boy.

I give it 3 Stallones hanging by a thin little rope ("Cliffhanger?") for suspense and 5 hockey sticks for hard-hitting action. The movie's well worth the price.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! IF YOU READ FURTHER RIGHT NOW, YOU ALSO GET...

My take on "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty!" The Wife and I saw it today ($5 admission before noon any day!), and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It's based on the late James Thurber's story of the same name, about a worker drone with a vivid imagination. Ben Stiller, co-writer/producer/director/star, hits a home run with this one! Storywise and visually.

I gotta say something about Adam Scott, who plays Mitty's arrogant new boss. (You may know him from TV's "Parks and Recreation." I don't watch it, but I recognize him.) He plays his part convincingly enough, I want to punch him in the throat!

This is one of those movies that doesn't think the F-word is "funny." Not a single epithet that I can recall. This is not a rock 'em sock 'em Guys' Movie, but a solid one you and the "little woman" can both enjoy. But, Guys, it's not sappy.

I give it 5 medium popcorns and 2 small cokes. All for enjoyability.
