Review KY.gL.e — Riddick

Do you remember "Pitch Black" or "The Chronicles of Riddick?" Released in 2000 and 2004, respectively, they star Vin Diesel as possibly the only survivor of the planet Furya.

(Click http://riddick.wikia.com/wiki/Furyans for Riddick's pseudo-history, if you're into such things. I am.)

Anyway, this week's $5 Guys' Movie, titled — surprisingly— "Riddick," is the third in this series. 'S not a profound source of intellectual enlightenment, but it's a pretty fair guys' flick.

Plus side, it contains enough rock 'em sock 'em to maybe satisfy MMA fans, especially militant females (You'll understand if you see this movie.). Lotsa monster predators; futuristic gunplay (Though I find it curious that in the 29th century, versions of the submachine gun will still be the preferred weapons of chaos.), and even a "puppy" for you big ol' testosteroned softies.

It includes a couple of explosions, but not of the big, WOW! variety. No car chases, but they drug out the ol' reliable rocket hovercycles, ala "Star Wars" and "Judge Dred." Some blood, but not overly done. (Moms, this isn't a little kids' movie, anyway.)

Minus side, it began too slowly for my taste. For maybe the first 20 minutes, I got the feeling I'd wandered into some futuristic predator/nature flick. Once it got going, however.... I do wonder, though, if moviemakers may be focusing on the "wonders" of iMax and 3D to the detriment of story. Also, the Riddick character has the potential to be fascinating. I wish they'd make him a bit deeper.

These are all minor faults, though. My buddy J and I like the movie. I give "Riddick" 5 knuckle sandwiches and a T-Rex jawbone for some pretty nasty predators.

{Footnote: The woman who sat a 3-4 seats over from laughed maniacally every time one of the characters delivered a particularly vicious blow or well-aimed shot. Disconcerting? Hmm. I think I'll be watchful at our next few Guy's Movie outings. Jus' sayin'....}
