Two movies this week. The $5 Tuesday flick (which — GRRR! — now costs $5.25) and a $5.25 (again, GRRR!) pre-noon movie. Both are well worth seeing.
Interestingly enough, according to my normally sterling standards, neither is particularly highly rated as Guys' Movies.
The first, "Ender's Game." What can I say, besides "Wow!" Based on another best-selling book I haven't read (so many reads, so little time), it's in a not-too-distant future where Earth's best soldiers are teens and pre-, who show off-the-scale video game genius. Two words: super geeks. You may have seen Harrison Ford making the late-night rounds talking it up. He's the only big star in it.
Not one crudity in the whole movie ("No kidding? That's great! ...What's wrong with the movie?" "Nothing. It's terrific!"). Its CGI is vertigo-inducing, and I love the storyline. I expected to be preached at with a bunch of new-age, environmental stuff, but it didn't happen!
A bit of brief hand-to-hand and some zapping/exploding spacecraft, Moms, but no real testestone-laced violence or sex. This isn't that sort of movie. Sorry, Guys.
I give it only 1 knuckle sandwich. But I'm adding 3 cherry bombs, 3 joysticks and 1 copy of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War."
Good flick, Guys. Worth the admission.
But wait! There's MORE! (...applause applause...)
There's "Last Vegas," the movie J my buddy and I took our wives to — and it's a HOOT! (Do they still say that?). Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman (he's NOT dead) and Kevin Kline. Three lifelong pals gather in Vegas for the fourth's wedding — to a MUCH younger woman.
Don't mistakenly think it's a senior version of "Hangover" and its sequel(s?). It's not. It's about friendship. And it's funnier than poop! Only one F-bomb, no real nudity/sex, and only a coupla punches thrown by a septuagenarian arm. Don't wanna say more, 'cuz I don't wanna ruin it for you.
I give it ½ knuckle sandwich, 6 "A Christmas Story" "major award" lamps for scenery, and 17 smiley faces for laughs.
And that's NOT ALL! You also get..NOT a chick flick!!!
It's very, verrrrry FUNNY! See it.
Who CARES about socially redeeming films? They're for WIMPS! This is for the GUY who likes a lotta ACTION in his movies – and once in awhile, a few laughs. (I gotta admit, though, once in awhile we'll talk about some other kind of flick just to keep The Wife happy.) If you enjoy this, tell your friends!
