My buddy J and other buddy A and I saw "The Deliveryman" for this week's $5.25 Tuesday Guys' Movie. Big mistake.
No martial arts moves, no explosions, no eye-gouges, no groin kicks, no broken teeth, no gunplay, no sexy women (well, one) and no nudity (um, the last two actually go together). As a Guys' movie, it's almost a chick flick.
Having established that, however, I gotta say it was pretty entertaining! Vince Vaughn, Cobie Smulders (Robin on "How I Met Your Mother") and the other actors whose names and faces I don't recognize, have made a nice movie. But again, NOT a Guys' movie.
In this flick, some 150 of David Wozniak's (a character; probably not Steve's brother) 550-plus offspring sue to learn their biological father's identity. (He — Wozniak — has been, shall we say, an enthusiastic depositor in a local sperm bank.)
Why'd we see it? Two reasons: 1-The trailers misled us. They pitched it as somewhat bawdy, emphasizing his many "kids." 2-The past few weeks have been a vacuum (until tomorrow, when the second half of "The Hobbit" opens) of mindless action films, i.e. Guys' movies. We took a chance.
Is "The Deliveryman" a good movie? Yes. I'll probably watch it again when it comes on the tube, but not with my buddies. With The Wife.
Moms, I can't recall this being too bad a movie. Fairly harmless. Its subject, however, is borderline, so you might not wanna just send Little Suzie or Johnny skipping off to the matinee by themselves for this one.
Guys, if you need your weekly Guy's movie fix, this isn't the one to see. Wait and catch Smaug in the hobbit movie, or rent "Battleship," "Pacific Rim" or "Homefront." I give "The Deliveryman" 6 smiley faces for humor, 3 tear-soaked hankies for schmaltz and 5 antique Olivetti typewriters for story creativity.
