Guys, I got a movie you just gotta see: "Lone Survivor."
A coupla buddies and I saw it at this week's $5(and a quarter) Movie Tuesday outing. What a flick! It's the most intense movie I've ever seen. It tells the story of the four-man SEAL Team 10 mission to capture/kill what the military terms a "high-value" Taliban target. And it's told by the only only man who came home, Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class Marcus Luttrell (ret.).
At the time, 2005, I remember hearing only that the U.S. military lost 16 troop when Afghan radicals shot down a helicopter. Nothing about what brought the chopper there or any SEALS mission.
I don't wanna ruin the story for anyone, so I'll just say, surprisingly to me, the film is completely without political agenda. It's gritty, true to life and offers a solid glimpse at the mindset and dedication and esprit de corps of our fighting forces — especially special ops. And gives us a peek at the dedication of the Afghans standing against the radical tyrants. It makes me proud to be a vet and an American.
And it's more than a Guys' Movie. It's a Real Man's Movie. Intense enough that I was a bit curious how my Marine combat-vet friend might handle it. (He's fine.)
Moms, this isn't a flick you'll wanna take/send Junior to see, or that you'll wanna see yourself.
It gets 5 carbines, 1 white turban, 1 American flag and 1 huge BOO-RAH!
If you're a vet, this is your movie.
